This website focuses on telecommunications regulatory news, but, every once in a while, we will draw readers' attention to news items that are of more general interest.

Radionet Oy, a Finnish technology company, made two noteworthy announcements in the past few days.

On 11 Nov 2003, seven Finnish Public Wireless LAN (PWLAN) operators announced a roaming agreement, which relies on the utilisation of technology supplied by Radionet. The agreement between the operators is open for extension to include other operators, including operators outside Finland.

On 4 Nov 2003, Radionet demonstrated what it calls "the first vertical handover in commercial networks", i.e. "seamlessly switching between different network connections all the while an application is running". The demonstration was carried out across WLAN, LAN and Telia Sonera Finland’s commercial GPRS networks.

Further details can be found on Radionet's website.

Specific details relating to the "vertical handover" research project can be found here.
